WEDNESDAY 26TH MARCH - Plymouth today.

Going into Devon! Foreign parts!

Plymouth is our nearest city of reasonable size and we had to go there for something. This meant crossing the River Tamar into Devon. These two bridges are at Saltash where the railway bridge - Royal Albert bridge was designed by the great Victorian engineer Isambard Kingdom Brunel and was opened in 1859 by Prince Albert and is a fine and stately way to span the river's estuary. The road bridge was built in 1961 and is a functional suspension bridge not beautiful but necessary.

It costs £1 to leave Cornwall and nothing to get back in.

.
Oh just to make it more fun there is a tunnel under Saltash.

Having crossed back into Cornwall after completing our business the sky was amazing so I had to share it.

similarly, it costs nothing to go to Prince Edward Island in eastern Canada, and 40 bucks to leave. It's a bit of a national joke that the market demands 40 to get off the island but nothing to go there. anyway, those bridges look a lot prettier than PEI's confederation bridge (though not nearly as long).

I don't recall that bridge, but maybe we came from a different direction (from south-east). The daughter of a friend of mine lives in the Hoe district of Plymouth and we visited her there in Oct '06. We took a lovely walk from her place through Hoe Park to the water and all around the Royal Citadel there. We visited the Aquarium and then took a boat across to a lovely pub where we had an early supper. The views were stunning and I got some great photos of the lighthouse and the harbour. Beautiful city!

benjibopper:I will look at PEI bridge on Google. The Tamar estuary which these bridges span is so very beautiful.
leslie: We were on The Hoe yest too as it is just so delightful. The light was lovely and Plymouth Sound was fabulous. Where was the pub? Must seek it out sometime. Plymouth looked at its best yesterday.

I'd agree with your 'not beautiful but necessary' view of the road bridge. Brunel's bridge is the better looking. I just get a thrill crossing bridges and love feeling I've got the upper hand on all that space below. Great views up and down the Tamar.

We have an Albert Bridge in Belfast. Prince Albert laid a foundation stone in 1889. It has been restored recently.

Looks rainy!

mary, mary: My brother lives and works in Belfast so he could seek it out for me or even better if/when I get there I could see it for myself. Queen Vic kept Albert busy didn't she?
evalinn: No it was fine the raindrops were hiding in the clouds!
